Highlights:

  • The average electric car is only driven 10,686 miles a year, while the average hybrid is driven 12,924 miles
  • Electric cars are also the most expensive vehicle type, with an average new price of $68,692 versus hybrids that cost the least, with an average new price of $38,495
  • This disparity between use and cost makes electric cars more than twice as expensive for every 1,000 miles driven compared to a hybrid vehicle: $6,428 versus $2,978
  • The 20 most driven cars are almost all SUVs and minivans; the 20 least driven cars are mostly performance cars and electric cars
  • The most driven car is the Chrysler Pacifica, which is driven an average of 20,882 miles a year and costs $2,280 for every 1,000 miles of use
  • The least driven car is the Mazda MX-5 Miata, which is driven an average of 5,073 miles a year and costs $6,540 for every 1,000 miles of use

With car prices still near record highs, consumers looking to cut vehicle expenses should carefully consider how much they plan to drive their next new vehicle as part of their budgeting process. While the average new car costs $3,593 for every 1,000 miles it’s driven, high-use vehicles like the Chrysler Pacifica average 20,882 miles of annual use and only cost $2,280 per 1,000 miles. Low-use models like the Mazda MX-5 Miata average just 5,073 miles a year and cost $6,540 for every 1,000 miles driven.

iSeeCars analyzed the odometer readings and historical new car prices from over 1 million 3-year-old used cars sold from November 2024 to April 2025 and found that the average new car price is $44,223 and the average annual use is 12,307 miles per year. The analysis also identified a wide range in the cost to drive by fuel type, with hybrids costing 15.0% less and electric vehicles costing 85.5% more per mile driven compared to gas vehicles.

Cost to Drive by Fuel Type

While gasoline remains the dominant fuel type among new cars, hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles are all gaining market share. As a group, hybrids are the cheapest cars to drive because so many of them are lower-priced models like the Honda Insight, Toyota Corolla and Toyota Prius. Electric vehicles are the most expensive models to drive, costing more than twice as much as hybrids for every 1,000 miles driven.
The Most and Least Driven Cars by Drivetrain - iSeeCars Study
Drivetrain Average MIles Driven per Year Average New Price Price per 1k Miles per Year
Hybrid 12,924 $38,495 $2,978

Plug-In Hybrid 11,614 $58,387 $5,027
EV 10,686 $68,692 $6,428
“Hybrids tend to be lower-priced models that are also driven the most per year, likely due to their low fuel costs,” said Brauer. “This gives them a cost-to-drive advantage over every other fuel type, particularly electric cars.”

The 20 Most Driven Cars

The Chrysler Pacifica is the most driven car, averaging over 20,000 miles of use per year. It’s followed by the Chrysler Voyager, Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, and the Chevrolet Malibu, all of which average over 19,000 miles of annual use.

“Given the dominance of SUVs and minivans on the most driven list, it’s impressive to see sedans like the Chevrolet Malibu, Nissan Altima, Dodge Charger, and Toyota Camry on the list of most driven models,” said Brauer. “All of these sedans see a certain amount of rental fleet use, which is likely pulling up their annual mileage numbers.”

The 20 Least Driven Cars

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is the least driven car, followed by the GMC Hummer EV, Mazda MX-5 Miata RF (Retractable Fastback), and the Mini Hardtop 2 Door EV. Of the 20 least driven vehicles, eight are either SUVs or a truck (F-150 Lightning), and five of those are electric vehicles.

“It’s telling that vehicles like the GMC Hummer EV, Mazda MX-30 EV, Ford F-150 Lightning, and Volkswagen ID.4 are among the least driven models,” said Brauer. “These are all utility vehicles that should be seeing a lot of use, but their electric drivetrains appear to limit their annual miles.”

The 20 Cheapest Cars to Drive

The Mitsubishi Mirage is the cheapest car to drive based on its average annual miles and new car price. Most of the 20 cheapest cars to drive are low-cost models, but the ranking isn’t calculated by price alone. For example, the 8th-ranked Chevrolet Malibu costs substantially more than the other nine cheapest cars to drive, but it has a relatively high annual driving rate, making it one of the cheapest cars to drive.

“Most of the 20 cheapest cars to drive are gasoline models, but the Toyota Corolla and Honda Insight make the list with hybrid drivetrains,” said Brauer. “These cars are both relatively low cost while seeing high use, and with their hybrid technology they will also have relatively low fuel costs.”

The 20 Most Expensive Cars to Drive

The Porsche 911 is the most expensive car to drive based on its average annual miles and new car price. With the combination of an average price just under $180,000 and average annual miles of 2,961, the 911 costs nearly 17 times the industry average for every 1,000 miles driven. Porsche is the most prominent brand on this list, with seven models in the top 20.

“The range of driving costs between models is vast, with the Mitsubishi Mirage’s $1,119 for every 1,000 miles driven offering a stark contrast to the Porsche 911’s $60,708 per 1,000 miles driven,” said Brauer. “Premium and performance cars, with their high prices and low use, offer many attractive traits, but they also cost their owners a lot of money on a per-mile basis.”

The Cheapest Trucks to Drive

Ford’s Maverick compact pickup has combined low-cost with high utility since it debuted in 2022. The market has recognized this, with high demand and strong sales from day one. Compact and midsize trucks offer a high level of utility at a much lower price than full-size models, giving them a clear cost-to-drive advantage.

“Being able to drive for short distances without burning fuel reduces the operating costs of plug-in hybrid vehicles,” said Brauer. “For buyers seeking minimal CO2 production without the prospect of range anxiety, plug-in hybrids offer a compelling combination of cost and efficiency.”

The 10 Cheapest Electric Vehicles to Drive

The Chevrolet Bolt is the cheapest electric vehicle to drive based on its average annual miles and average new car price. The Bolt is followed by the Nissan LEAF, with both of them driving about 10,000 miles a year and both of them costing slightly less than the overall industry average of $3,593 per 1,000 miles driven. While Tesla sells more EVs than any other brand, its high prices mean only the Model 3 made the top 10 list for lowest cost to drive.

“Between their low annual mileage and high purchase price, there’s no denying the relatively high cost of driving an electric car,” said Brauer. “While these are the 10 cheapest electric cars to drive, eight of them are still higher than the overall industry average, confirming the low value these vehicles offer relative to other drivetrains options.”

Methodology

iSeeCars analyzed the odometer readings from over 1 million 3-year-old used cars sold from November 2024 to April 2025, and then compared these mileage numbers by model to the list prices of the same models when they were sold new. Average MSRP was used for cars where average list price was not available, notably cars from Tesla. The average miles driven per year were calculated for each model as well as drivetrain, and the average new car price was expressed as a cost per 1,000 miles driven per year. The latter was used to rank models from most expensive to least expensive with respect to their driving patterns.
