Best Luxury Midsize SUVs for 2024
The best used and new luxury midsize SUVs based on a data-driven analysis of each vehicle's reliability, resale value and safety.
The best luxury midsize SUV is the Acura MDX based on our analysis of 12 million vehicles to assess their reliability, resale value and safety. Its overall rating of 8.9 out of 10 reflects the MDX’s reliability, value retention and safety scores. A new Acura MDX costs between $50,150 and $73,800 while a used version costs between $28,424 and $58,594. This luxury midsize SUV can seat up to 7 people and is EPA rated to deliver up to 22 miles per gallon in mixed city/highway driving.
The Luxury Midsize SUV category consists of 21 models priced between $48,600 and $196,300 for new vehicles and between $22,587 and $131,995 for used vehicles. iSeeCars has sufficient vehicle data to rate and rank 16 of these 21 models based on their reliability, value retention and safety scores.
Because these are luxury midsize SUVs, they are smaller and easier to maneuver than full-size SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade or Lincoln Navigator, while still offering a third-row seat and more interior and cargo space than compact SUVs. These are almost all crossover SUVs, riding on car-based (or unibody) platforms, so you can expect luxury-car-like ride quality and driving dynamics, along with improved fuel economy compared to extreme off-road-oriented SUVs.
But don't assume these best luxury SUVs are pavement-only people movers. With advanced all-wheel-drive systems and high-horsepower engines, luxury SUVs like the Land Rover Discovery and Porsche Cayenne can handle aggressive off-road adventures. Luxury shoppers seeking a premium three-row SUV with a starting price under $60,000 should start here. Every model below offers upscale styling, an advanced infotainment system, capable towing, and advanced powertrains.
The Acura MDX's and Lexus RX 350's top rankings are reflected not only in their high quality scores but their consistent sales performance, as two of the most popular vehicles in this category. The Mercedes-Benz M-Class and Lincoln MKX are two older models that have been replaced by newer versions, yet they remain desirable options for used cars shoppers looking to save money. Speaking of saving money, buyers seeking the best SUVs in the midsize category, but without the luxury price tag, should check out our Best Midsize SUVs page.
If you’re seeking a larger luxury SUV like the Audi Q8, Cadillac XT6, or Lincoln Aviator, check out our Best Luxury Large SUVs, and if you're seeking a smaller, 2-row SUV or a crossover with a premium nameplate see our list of the Best Luxury Small and Compact SUVs. How We Rank These Cars
iSeeCars Best Car Rankings are calculated based on the latest research by our data science team and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
We analyze data from over 12 million new and used vehicles in our Longest-Lasting Cars and 5-Year Depreciation Studies, combined with the NHTSA's Safety Ratings to give you an unbiased guide to the best vehicles in each segment.
After being evaluated, vehicles with the highest average scores earn a spot in the iSeeCars Best Car Rankings. (No final score is given to vehicles missing a score in any of the categories, but scores for other categories are still shown.)
Vehicles are scored in three categories:
Reliability | 33.3%
The reliability score represents an analysis of iSeeCars' proprietary research on the longest-lasting vehicles.
Value Retention | 33.3%
The value retention score is based on our data science team's statistical analysis and prediction of 5-year depreciation from MSRP to determine which cars hold their value best, using US Bureau of Labor Statistics data to adjust for inflation.
Safety | 33.3%
The safety score is calculated based on the last five years of crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and incorporates the latest Top Safety Pick information from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
