Highlights:

  • The Ford F-150 maintains its decades-long grip as the best-selling used vehicle in America.
  • The “big three” trucks (Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and Ram 1500) also maintain their longstanding rankings as the three best-selling used models in the U.S.
  • The Chevrolet Equinox is the best-selling used vehicle that’s not a truck, ranking fourth after the big three.
  • Tesla’s Model 3 is the best-selling electric vehicle, even though it didn’t make the overall top 20 list.
  • The Chevrolet Malibu jumped 21 slots in popularity, likely reflecting the release of thousands of these models from rental fleets after it was cancelled in 2025.
  • The Ford F-150 is the best-selling used vehicle in 28 states, down from 34 just two years ago.

The Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, and Dodge Ram remain the kings of the road, but the F-150's footprint is starting to shrink at the state level. It's no longer a foregone conclusion that it will be the most popular vehicle in every region of the U.S.

iSeeCars analyzed over 9 million used car sales from the last five model years (2020 - 2025). Each model’s share of used car sales was calculated nationally, as well as within each metro area and state.

“If you like stability in your rankings, this year’s list of most popular used cars will make you happy,” said iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer. “The rankings show minimal variations from 2024, though the dominance of full-size trucks is shrinking.”

The 20 most popular used cars in America

The overall ranking for popular used cars saw a few notable changes in 2025. The most significant came from the Chevrolet Malibu, which leapt 21 spots this year from 29th to 8th most popular used car. With Malibu production cancelled in 2025, rental car agencies likely released these models into the used market and replaced them with sedans still in production.

The Nissan Rogue and Toyota Corolla also experienced upward moves in 2025, while the Toyota Camry, Tacoma, and RAV4 lost a bit of ground among the top models.

2 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2.5% 2
3 Ram 1500 1.8% 3
4 Chevrolet Equinox 1.8% 4
5 Nissan Rogue 1.7% 7
6 Toyota Camry 1.7% 5

16 Jeep Grand Cherokee 1.0% 13
17 Hyundai Tucson 1.0% 26
18 Ford Escape 1.0% 15
19 Ford Edge 1.0% 22
20 Toyota Highlander 0.9% 17
“The ever-popular truck and SUV segments continue to resonate with used car buyers,” said Brauer. “This means only four actual ‘cars’ are among the 20 most popular used cars in 2025: the Toyota Camry, Chevrolet Malibu, Toyota Corolla, and Honda Civic.”

Most popular used EVs in America

The electric vehicle segment continues to expand, with dozens of new models introduced over the past five years. This influx contributes to a more diverse used EV market as they come off lease or are sold by their original owners. While all four Tesla models are among the first six rankings, the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Volkswagen ID.4 are gaining ground. The Chevrolet Bolt, one of the best-selling EVs in the late 2010s, slid four places over the past year.
Most Popular Used EVs in the U.S., 2025 - iSeeCars Study
2025 Rank Model 2025 % Share of 1- to 5-Year-Old Used EVs 2024 Rank
1 Tesla Model 3 19.5% 1
2 Tesla Model Y 19.3% 2
3 Ford Mustang Mach-E 5.0% 4
4 Volkswagen ID.4 3.9% 9
5 Tesla Model S 3.0% 8
6 Tesla Model X 3.0% 7
7 Chevrolet Bolt EV 2.8% 3
8 Hyundai Ioniq 5 2.4% 17
9 Chevrolet Bolt EUV 2.2% 5
10 Mercedes-Benz EQS 2.2% 12
“Most electric models are moving up in rankings, though the Chevrolet Bolt and Bolt EUV both dropped four rankings in 2025,” said Brauer. “GM cancelled the Bolt in 2023, despite its market success, but restarted production this year in an effort to regain lost share in the EV segment.”

Most popular used SUVs in America

Compact SUVs are the most popular models for several large automakers. Toyota’s RAV4 has been the best-selling new SUV for over eight years, the used market tells a different story. Currently, the Chevrolet Equinox, Nissan Rogue, and the larger three-row Ford Explorer slightly outpace Toyota’s small SUV.
Most Popular Used SUVs in the U.S., 2025 - iSeeCars Study
2025 Rank Model 2025 % Share of 1- to 5-Year-Old Used SUVs 2024 Rank
1 Chevrolet Equinox 3.0% 1
2 Nissan Rogue 3.0% 2
3 Ford Explorer 2.6% 3
4 Toyota RAV4 2.5% 4
5 Honda CR-V 1.8% 5
“A compact SUV’s combination of functionality, fuel efficiency, and price make it the most popular segment in the U.S. market, with models like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 displacing longstanding corporate siblings like the Honda Accord and Civic and Toyota Camry and Corolla,” said Brauer.

Most popular used trucks in America

Full-size trucks have spent decades as the most popular models in both the new and used vehicle segments. Yet Toyota’s Tacoma, which rules the midsize category, has already displaced the GMC Sierra 1500 and is closing in on the Ram 1500.
Most Popular Used Trucks in the U.S., 2025 - iSeeCars Study
2025 Rank Model 2025 % Share of 1- to 5-Year-Old Used Trucks 2024 Rank
1 Ford F-150 19.3% 1
2 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 17.4% 2
3 Ram 1500 12.8% 3
4 Toyota Tacoma 10.3% 4
5 GMC Sierra 1500 9.8% 5
“The midsize Toyota Tacoma is gaining on full-size trucks, with over half the F-150’s market share, and climbing,” said Brauer. “This is a testament to the Tacoma’s long-term durability and universal appeal throughout the truck community.”

Most popular passenger sedans in America

While no longer the most popular overall models in any automaker’s line up, compact and midsize sedans retain a shrinking but still loyal buyer base. This helps brands like Honda, Nissan, and Toyota maintain significant sales volume every year.

2025 Rank Model 2025 % Share of 1- to 5-Year-Old Used Passenger Cars 2024 Rank

2 Chevrolet Malibu 6.0% 8
3 Toyota Corolla 5.9% 3
4 Nissan Altima 5.2% 4
5 Honda Civic 5.2% 2
“The Chevrolet Malibu made real headway in used car popularity in 2025. Ironic, given that Chevrolet recently discontinued it,” said Brauer.

Most popular used cars by U.S. state

The Ford F-150 is the most popular used model in 28 states, down from 34 states just two years ago. This suggests the truck’s national dominance is shrinking relative to models gaining share in the used car market, including the Chevrolet Equinox and Malibu in specific regions. The increasing size and functionality, along with higher fuel efficiency, of SUVs looks to be challenging the longstanding appeal of full-size trucks.

“More states are rejecting the Ford F-150’s popularity, which is likely a reflection of higher fuel prices and more capable midsize truck alternatives in recent years,” said Brauer. “The F-150’s number 1 ranking has fallen from 34 to 28 states in the past two years, suggesting a drop below 50% of all U.S. states is coming.”

Most popular used cars by U.S. city

A more diverse field of popular used vehicles is seen across the largest U.S. cities. The Ford F-150 still holds the number one spot in only 22 of the top 50 cities, followed by the Chevrolet Malibu in seven, the Chevrolet Silverado in five, and the Chevrolet Equinox and Toyota Corolla in four.

“It’s not surprising to see the Ford F-150 slowly being replaced by smaller, easier to manage models in urban areas, especially as both dense traffic and scarce parking get more challenging to navigate in a full-size truck,” said Brauer.

Used car trends for 2026 and beyond

The rising cost of new vehicles will keep demand for used cars high in 2026, though prices will likely moderate and lower fuel costs should keep truck and SUV transactions on the leading edge of used car activity. We also expect a steady stream of electric vehicles coming off lease and entering the used car market, giving used car shoppers a broader range of options in both vehicle type and powertrain design.

Methodology

iSeeCars analyzed over 9 million used car sales from the last five model years (2020 - 2024) in 2025. Each model’s share of used car sales was calculated nationally, as well as within each metro area and state. Heavy-duty vehicles were excluded from the analysis.
