The best electric SUV is the Tesla Model X based on our analysis of 12 million vehicles to assess their reliability, resale value and safety. Its overall rating of 8.4 out of 10 reflects the Model X’s reliability, value retention and safety scores. A new Tesla Model X costs between $77,990 and $92,990 while a used version costs between $39,993 and $85,480. This electric SUV can seat up to 6 people and is EPA rated to deliver up to 100 miles per gallon equivalent in mixed city/highway driving.

The Electric SUV category consists of 44 models priced between $27,800 and $179,900 for new vehicles and between $16,670 and $132,763 for used vehicles. iSeeCars has sufficient vehicle data to rate and rank 2 of these 44 models based on their reliability, value retention and safety scores.

Unlike electric cars, which have been offered by multiple automakers for well over a decade, SUVs with electric powertrains have been relatively rare until recently. Overview

Tesla created the Model X using much of the technology adapted from the successful Model S large sedan. The Model X fills many buyers’ needs for a more roomy, more practical family vehicle with no performance sacrifice.  The Model X’s signature gullwing doors in the second row are a blessing and a curse. They offer exclusivity and a unique flair. However, they also preclude a top-mounted bike, ski, or kayak rack. Therefore, it is hard to call the Model X a sport utility vehicle.  The Model X has a level of performance that was previously reserved for supercars, and in a drag race it can smoke almost any similarly sized gas-powered car.

Overview

The Kia Niro EV is one of the most under-rated EVs on sale in America. The Niro is right-sized for many families with ample interior space and a large cargo volume of 53 cu ft with the rear seats folded down. Like the Niro hybrid and plug-in hybrid, the Niro EV was designed from the ground up to be a green vehicle with an electric drivetrain, as its effective packaging confirms. We drove a Kia Niro EV back-to-back with the Tesla Model 3 SR+ and preferred the Niro. The Kia Niro shares a lot of traits with the similarly appealing Hyundai Kona EV. For the 2021 model year, Kia is making some minor updates.

Overview

Tesla’s Model Y is set to overtake the Model 3 as Tesla’s top-selling model and the country’s top-selling battery-electric vehicle. Now entering its second year of sales, the Model Y has established itself as the benchmark in this segment. The Model Y offers sporty handling, but some find its ride a bit more firm than they like. Consumer Reports has panned this Tesla’s reliability, though like past Teslas reliability should improve as more are produced. Since it is a crossover, not a sedan, the Model Y offers much more practical cargo space and its frunk (front trunk) is another functionality benefit. Tesla’s Model Y is technically offered at a starting price close to similarly-sized conventional crossovers. But finding one of those base Model Ys can be extremely difficult. Shoppers should carefully consider the trim they select as they have changed rapidly in the vehicle’s single year of availability.

Overview

iSeeCars was one of the first publications to test the Mustang Mach-E, and it was an eye-opening experience. This roomy four-door hatchback vehicle offers great interior space for every passenger and ample storage space, with up to 60 cubic feet of cargo volume when the second-row seat is folded down. However, it's the driving experience that sets the Mustang Mach-E apart from almost every competitor. Like the Jaguar I-PACE, it is a high-performance vehicle with high-performance trims that accelerate from 0-60 MPH in just 3.5 seconds. Even mid-trim Mach-E cars can achieve a sub-5-second 0-60 MPH sprint. Handling is surprising. Despite its size and weight, the battery pack’s low position (under the passenger’s feet) means this Mustang Mach-E handles like a sports car. It also offered better ride quality than a Tesla Model Y after our back-to-back test of both.  The Mach-E is a modern EV, so its infotainment system consists of a large central screen with one knob mainly used as a volume control for the audio system. Its screen is larger than a Tesla’s and we found the layout of menu items and icons to be much more intuitive to operate. Ford adds a second information display directly in front of the driver, a big plus over Tesla’s single, center screen (located out of the driver’s immediate field of focus). Every Ford Mustang Mach-E trim offers Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration. None of Tesla’s Model Y trims do.

Overview

Audi’s e-tron came to market as a 2019 model year vehicle. This two-row crossover is similar in size and mission to the Jaguar I-PACE, Tesla Model Y, and Mustang Mach-E. The e-tron is an Audi-lovers EV. It features the same level of European premium interior materials and features one would expect from this automaker, and its design is contemporary and classy.  The Audi e-tron is available in three trim levels and is priced new from the high $60Ks to the mid $80Ks, which puts it in an EV price segment without many peers. That is a kind way of saying it costs a lot more than the Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model Y, which offer similar specifications and longer range.  The e-tron is about to morph into a line of vehicles from Audi. A low-slung GT sedan and a sportback will augment the original e-tron, offering buyers a variety of body styles.
