Overview
Let’s call this one Bronco versus Bronco Lite. Certainly, when properly equipped, the Bronco Sport is capable off-road, but roughing it is something the Bronco lives for. It’s bigger, beefier and more angular than the Bronco Sport, but the Sport’s design is aggressive enough to capitalize on the Bronco’s aura, and the ride is smoother. The Bronco is offered in two- and four-door configurations, while the Sport is four-door only. The Bronco is about 16 inches longer, two inches wider and three inches taller than the Sport, which has dimensions closer to the vehicle it is based on, the Ford Escape. The Bronco has two turbocharged engines, a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder and a 2.7-liter V-6. Transmission choice is a 7-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic. The Sport is powered by a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder or a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, both turbocharged, with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel-drive is standard on both models. The Bronco edges out its cousin in towing capability, and perhaps in moxie, but the Sport is no shrinking violet.
