Since its introduction, the Taurus has been a forward-thinking model in the Ford lineup, often introducing new technologies and design language for the automaker's sedan line. European styling and front-wheel drive have been the standard for the Taurus since day one. It's been noted as a fuel-efficient big car, something unheard of in the 1980s, and became very popular as a fleet use, rental, and police vehicle in the 1990s. It's especially well-noted for its robust V6 engines and reputation for longevity.
The first-generation Ford Taurus ran until 1991, with the second-generation coming for the 1992 model year. This one ran for only three years, being replaced in 1996 with a third-generation Taurus. The fourth-generation entered in 2000 and was replaced with the fifth-generation in 2008. The sixth-generation was introduced in the 2010 model year as a complete redesign of the car to meet Ford's newer design language and global standards.
The most sought-after models of the Taurus are the SHO performance options and the wagon models introduced throughout the sedan's production span. Problems with the Taurus center on transmission failure and most of those are in the troubled 2003-2005 model years (fourth-generation). The Taurus has otherwise enjoyed a long reputation for reliability.
Competitors to the Taurus include full-sized sedans from the other Detroit makes as well as the Toyota Avalon. The chief competition for the Ford comes from the Chevrolet Impala, but the Chrysler 300 is also noted for its unique styling and heritage. The sporty Dodge Charger and the upscale Buick LaCrosse should also be considered. There are many reasons to look at the Ford Taurus, even at high mileage, and if the price is right, it can make for a great vehicle for those wanting a full-sized sedan.
