Car safety ratings should be an important part of any research when buying a new or used vehicle. The safety ratings are from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and are more stringent as of the 2011 model year. Starting with 2011 models, NHTSA introduced tougher tests and rigorous new 5-Star Safety Ratings that provide more information about vehicle safety and crash avoidance technologies. Think of the 5-Star Safety Ratings this way: 5-stars is the highest rating, one-star is the lowest. What you should look for are 5-star ratings in frontal and side crash testing and rollover testing, as well as an overall 5-star rating. Here’s how the safety ratings feature works: Choose the make, model and year of the vehicle and click “Search.” The car safety ratings will show for the various models and styles or trims, as well as the manufacturers suggested retail price for that vehicle. Repeat the process to find the crash test ratings of any other vehicles you are interested in.
