Highlights:

  • The “big three” full-size trucks, Ford’s F-150, Chevrolet’s Silverado 1500, and Ram’s 1500, led used car sales in 2024
  • Two electric vehicles, the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y, made the top 100 most popular used model for the first time, and four Tesla models ranked in the top 10 most popular used EVs
  • SUVs are the most popular vehicle type, making up 65 of the top 100 best-selling used cars, and ranking in 14 of the top 25 slots
  • The Ford F-150 is the most popular vehicle in 26 of the 50 largest U.S. cities, followed by the Chevrolet Equinox in six cities and the Toyota Camry in four cities
  • The Tesla Model 3 is the most popular/best selling used car in San Francisco and Seattle

America’s love affair with the pickup truck continues, as the “big three” full-size models, the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and Ram 1500, were the best-selling vehicles in the used car market in 2024.

Other popular models in the top 10 rankings include the Toyota Camry, Toyota Tacoma, and Nissan Rogue. The Ford Explorer, Toyota RAV4, and Honda Civic round out the top 10 most popular used models. It’s worth noting that last year Chevy’s Equinox midsize SUV displaced the Ram 1500 as the third most-popular used car, but the Ram regained third place in 2024.

iSeeCars analyzed over 7.7 million 1- to 5-year-old used car sales in 2024 and calculated each model’s sales nationally and for the largest U.S. metro areas.

“While it’s not surprising to see trucks and SUVs dominating the list of popular used models, it is surprising to see an electric car, Tesla’s Model 3, make the top 30 ranking,” said Karl Brauer, iSeeCars Executive Analyst. “That’s the first time an EV has made the top 30. More importantly, the Model 3 was ranked 47th last year, showing the rapid growth of its popularity.”

Tesla’s model Y also made the top 100 list for the first time, jumping from number 129 to 74 in just one year. “At the rate these Teslas are moving up, we could see the Model 3 and Model Y ranked among the top 20 most popular used cars in another year or two,” said Brauer.

The 100 Most Popular Used Cars

The 100 most popular used car models are ranked below. SUVs and crossovers remain the best-selling cars in the new car market and that translates into them being the most popular cars in the used market. SUVs occupy 65 of the top 100 slots, confirming Americans’ growing preference for utility vehicles over minivans, wagons, hatchbacks, and sedans.

“While electric vehicles make up the majority of all-new models being introduced in recent model years, so far only Tesla has managed to break into the top 100 popular used vehicles,” said Brauer. “We’ll see if the Model 3 and Model Y continue to rise through the ranks of popular used models over the next few years.”

Most Popular Used Cars in America’s 50 Largest Cities

Although the Ford F-150 remains the most popular vehicle in 26 of the 50 largest U.S. cities, models like the Chevrolet Equinox and Toyota Camry are challenging the Ford F-Series, especially in some of the most populous metro areas.

The Equinox is the most popular used model in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Indianapolis, and Cincinnati. The Camry is the most popular used model in Fresno, West Palm Beach, Washington D.C. and Las Vegas. And at the city level, Tesla is once again disrupting the norm, with its Model 3 ranking as the most popular used car in San Francisco and Seattle.

Methodology

iSeeCars analyzed over 7.7 million used car sales from the last five model years (2019 - 2023) in 2024. Each model’s share of used car sales was calculated nationally, as well as within each metro area and state. Heavy-duty vehicles were excluded from the analysis.
