Overview

The Toyota Camry ranks highly among similar vehicles, consistently placing second out of thirteen in safety, overall quality, and resale value. This indicates that the Camry is not only a safe and reliable choice for a midsize car, but it also holds its value well over time. These rankings suggest that the Camry is a top contender in its category, outperforming the majority of its competition in key areas. Therefore, it can be inferred that the Toyota Camry is a superior choice among midsize cars.

Overview (Final Score: B+)

The Toyota Camry was fully redesigned in 2018 and carries those changes forward into 2019 with just a few updates. There are several things that mark a very well-done midsize sedan and the Camry defines those things for the market. It's spacious, fuel efficient, safe, and comfortable.

For this year, the 2019 Toyota Camry ads some connectivity options for infotainment. With Apple CarPlay now (finally) in place and a new Amazon Alexa compatibility feature, the Camry's infotainment is becoming more modern. Outside of these additions, the Camry remains unchanged from last year's redesign.

The 2019 Camry comes in any of five trim levels in its standard gasoline variants and three trim levels in its Hybrid model. The Camry is a five-seat midsize sedan and is most noted as being the best-selling midsize sedan on the market, a title which it has held for many years.

For those who need a top-notch car that checks all of the need boxes, plus a few, the Camry is definitely a first choice. It dominates in a segment of very well-done rivals.

What We Love About the 2019 Toyota Camry:

  • Spacious interior, including large trunk volume

  • Nice everyday car with a lot of ergonomics

  • Fuel-efficient in all settings

What We Don't Love About the 2019 Toyota Camry:

  • Infotainment is well behind the curve

  • Noisy engine, no matter which is chosen, when accelerating

  • Hybrid has a floaty suspension quality

Exterior View (9/10)

The 2019 Toyota Camry, as the market leader, is expected to set the standard for the midsize segment and it does so well. With its new styling upgrade for 2018, Toyota took what was already a nicely done sedan design and added more curb appeal without going over the top.

The 2019 Camry has the signature Toyota hourglass grille, but it's softened greatly by the "smiling face" bars added to the top portion to house the Toyota logo. Headlamps are thin, but squared off for added bulkiness towards their forward points. The hoodline of the Camry has several lines that curve away from the center point to create aero styling for the car.

Along the sides, the 2019 Camry has simple, but effective body lines that draw the eye back towards the fastback-styled rear. This gives the Camry a notion of movement in its design while allowing the roofline to remain flatter without losing its stylish curvature. A large rear pillar is masked to create a fastback-type edge for sporty emphasis.

The overall look of the 2019 Toyota Camry is very well done and it's hard to find fault with it. Unlike Camry models of the 1990s and first-decade 2000s, this new Camry is not bland, boring, or hum-drum. A nice step forward for Toyota.

Interior Comfort, Quality, Ergonomics (9/10)

The 2019 Camry's interior is not as upscale or bling-infested as are some of its rivals, but it's got a good foundation that builds on daily use utility and comfort. All of the ergonomics and daily need boxes are ticked with the Camry, including easy entry and exit, good driving position adjustability at all trim points, and a comfortable, spacious cabin overall.

Everything in the Toyota Camry is aimed towards making passengers comfortable, the driver at ease behind the wheel, and the capability of the car versatile. A lot of visibility for the driver makes for easy driving while a comfortable set of front seats keep the driver and front passenger happy. The back seats are also very comfortable, especially at the outboards, and even three across won't be too unhappy. Child safety seat installation is a snap in the 2019 Camry thanks to easy-to-locate anchors.

There is a lot of legroom and headroom in the 2019 Toyota Camry. Cargo space is also large and a 60/40 split-fold rear seat is standard to make for even more. Trunk-mounted release handles for those seats are standard and a very nice touch. So is the low liftover height and wide opening of the deck lid.

Technology (7/10)

The definite achilles heel for the 2019 Camry is in its technology suite. There are a lot of included driver assistance techs on board, but some of them are difficult to switch off and they can be annoyingly aggressive. The Camry's adaptive cruise control, for example, tends to slow down quickly, like jamming on the brakes, and is then very pensive about speeding back up when the vehicle in front is cleared or a lane change has been made. Similarly, lane departure warning systems (standard) are sensitive and often misread the lines. Worse, they cannot be turned off.

Infotainment in the Camry is based on its Entune touchscreen system. It's easy to use, but not very useful and the lack of Android Auto (Toyota has been promising it for years) makes it subpar at best. The addition of Alexa connectivity is nice, but only marginally useful for most people. Toyota still prefers users adopt their in-house smartphone app. Especially for navigation.

Fuel Economy (9/10)

The 2019 Toyota Camry is still one of the most fuel-efficient midsize sedans in its class. With the base engine, the EPA rates the Camry at 29 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway. The V6 engine upgrade lowers those numbers to 22 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Our week with that model proved those numbers out at a 29 mpg average overall. The Camry Hybrid model is EPA-rated at 44 mpg in the city and 47 mpg on the highway for most editions with the LE model having a 51/53 city/highway rating. In the lower-MPG hybrid model, we averaged 46 mpg. An extremely frugal number indeed.

Predicted Reliability, Initial Quality Ratings (10/10)

The 2019 Toyota Camry has two things going for it with reliability ratings. First, it's rated as "Better Than Most" by the J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study. That's been a consistent result for years with this car. Next, the Toyota brand is top-ranked at Consumer Reports for reliability and the Camry consistently gets top scores in CR ratings as well.

Safety (10/10)

Another point of consistent high rankings for the Camry throughout its recent generations is in safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives the 2019 Camry a perfect score of five stars on all crash test results. Similarly, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named the Camry a Top Safety Pick+ with perfect scores of "Good" across all crash testing plus high scores for headlights and front crash prevention systems.

Performance (8/10)

The 2019 Toyota Camry has three powertrain options. The base model comes with a well-matched 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that outputs a respectable 203 horsepower in most trims. An eight-speed automatic transmission is also standard. This engine is a great match for the car and needs no improvement.

Sportier drivers, however, might want a V6 and the Camry has traditionally always offered one. The current-generation Camry has a peppy 301-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 that attaches to an eight-speed automatic. It feels good in the car and puts out strong acceleration at lower speeds, but loses a lot of fuel efficiency in the process.

Finally, the 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid features a detuned 2.5-liter four-cylinder that connects to a continuously variable transmission and two electric motors. The total system output is 208 horsepower and feels on par with the four-cylinder in most driving situations. With very good fuel economy numbers too.

The Camry is a nice drive in all its formats. It's not sporty, but it's not boring or listless either. We do note that the Hybrid model has a very spongy suspension, especially at highway speeds, that requires some sea legs to master. The Camry otherwise elicits few complaints from us or our passengers.

Pricing and Value (9/10)

The 2019 Toyota Camry is well-priced in most of its trim setups for the amenities offered. We like the LE and SE models for their good mix of inclusions and access to added options if budgets allow. The LE comes standard with a host of goodies while the SE takes that and adds a sportier suspension and a better steering feel, plus larger wheels and more. Similarly, in the Camry Hybrid model, we'd look to the LE as a best-of mixture of inclusions and options for the car. Plus maximum fuel efficiency.

The resale retention of the Camry is pretty good for the segment, but not stellar. Buyers should instead look towards maximizing ownership time with the car as a means towards highest value with the Camry.

Total Score and Competitive Comparison (71/80, 89%)

Most competitive with the 2019 Toyota Camry is the next-best-selling Honda Accord, which is a very well done sedan in its own right. Also well done are the Mazda Mazda6 and the Hyundai Sonata. All are worth cross-shopping against the Camry, especially if sportier driving or classier styling are your wont. If solid ergonomics, good looks, and great fuel economy are your top boxes to be checked, though, the Camry will win every time.

The 2019 Camry is a market leader for good reason and we think most buyers will be happy with their choice if this Toyota comes home with them. The midsize market is competitive, though not as popular as it once was, and the Camry has dominated it for a long time. For good reason.
