Overview

The Nissan Rogue performs exceptionally well in comparison to similar cars, particularly in terms of gas mileage and suitability for tall people. It holds the top spot on the Best Gas Mileage Small SUVs list, indicating its superior fuel efficiency. This makes it an excellent choice for those seeking to reduce their fuel costs and environmental impact. Additionally, it ranks third on the Best Small SUVs for Tall People list, suggesting it offers ample space and comfort for taller individuals. These rankings demonstrate the Nissan Rogue's overall versatility and appeal to a wide range of drivers.

Nissan's ProPILOTâ„¢ Assist technology, continuing to pave the way for future fully autonomous vehicles, will be available on the company's bestseller, the Rogue compact SUV. ProPILOT Assist reduces the hassle of stop-and-go driving by helping control acceleration, braking and steering during single-lane highway driving.

Overview (Final Score: B)

The Nissan Rogue was introduced in 2014 as an all-new model to compete in the fast-growing and now dominant small crossover-SUV segment. Since then, the Rogue has risen to become the best-selling Nissan model as well as the best-seller in the segment. The 2019 Nissan Rogue continues to be popular thanks to the Rogue's simple formula of offering comfort, safety, and versatility in an affordable package.

The 2019 Rogue adds more advanced safety systems availability across the trim lineup, but otherwise remains as it was last year. Most of the downsides to the Nissan Rogue are not major concerns and haven't thwarted buyers from showing up in droves. That speaks to the importance of hitting the right marks with a vehicle's design.

Customers looking for a roomy interior, large cargo area, comfortable seating, excellent safety scores, and good fuel economy will like the Rogue. Those needing peppy acceleration, an edgy feel, and top-end infotainment technology will not. As the Rogue has proven, most people are looking for practicality and usefulness in the small SUV segments, not flair. So the Rogue remains the best choice for most buyers in that market. And we don't blame them.

The 2019 Nissan Rogue is a small, five-seat crossover-SUV available in three basic trim levels plus a Hybrid model option. A smaller Rogue Sport model is also available, but quite different from the standard Rogue and is thus not reviewed here.

What We Don't Love About the 2019 Nissan Rogue:

  • Sluggish acceleration and listless steering

  • Sub-par outward visibility for the driver

  • Dated infotainment with slow responses

Exterior View (8/10)

The 2019 Nissan Rogue, being the best-selling model, defines what is "contemporary" in the small crossover-SUV segment. The result is a perception of bland design thanks to others using the Rogue as their template for the segment. In reality, the 2019 Rogue is a good-looking crossover that now melds into the crowd because the crowd has changed its style to match the Rogue's.

The Rogue was one of the first Nissan vehicles to feature the now-signature V-Motion grille for the brand. This starts the crossover's look, creating a wide, but not thick or fat front fascia that uses sharp headlamps and a big lower bumper cover to soften the big chrome insets at the grille. The hood runs from that fascia and back to the windscreen with four well-defined edges, two at each side, for aero-styling.

The raked windscreen and somewhat curved roofline add sportiness to the Rogue's look while plain body panels and simple wheel well surrounds keep the focus on the shape of the Rogue instead of design details. The arched rear hatch finishes the Rogue's look.

Interior Comfort, Quality, Ergonomics (9/10)

The 2019 Nissan Rogue has an upscale feel to its interior. Quality materials and soft touches as the norm give the Rogue a classier feel than its price tag might symbolize. The general ambiance is one of comfort and everyday goodness and ergonomics for daily use are well done. A higher seat height than the norm for this segment means that the Rogue is easier to get in and out of comparatively, though it also means there is less visibility for the driver than might be ideal.

For the 2018 model year, Rogue is on the move again - led by the addition of available ProPILOTâ„¢ Assist technology, which provides assisted steering, braking and accelerating during single-lane highway driving.

The interior of the Rogue is roomy and comfortable. Front seating is a near-perfect combination of firm and soft, creating what Nissan calls "Zero Gravity" seating. Switchgear is likewise very well done with a higher than expected amount of quality to them. The only thing difficult to reach is the Rogue's infotainment touchscreen. Everything else, including all driver controls, are well-placed and intuitive.

In the back seats, space is a bit more limited than what's found up front, but still better than average. Only the big and tall will find the Rogue to be troublesome in the back and three adults sitting across is going to be cramped regardless. For most passengers, though, knee, leg, and headroom are good in the Rogue. Three kids across is fine and installation of child safety seats in the outboard positions is fairly easy. We do note that it takes some shoving to get a LATCH seat to anchor properly.

Cargo space in the 2019 Nissan Rogue is very good for the class. There is 32 cubic feet of room behind the back seats. Those seats fold almost entirely flat for a cavernous 70 cubic feet when needed. The rear seats in the Rogue are split-fold by default. Optional for the Rogue is a very well-done cargo area organization system that creates segments, shelving, etc. on the fly.

Technology (8/10)

The 2019 Rogue has a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen as standard equipment. Bluetooth, two USB ports, and Apple CarPlay / Android Auto are standard as well. The touchscreen remains at 7 inches throughout the trim lineup, but more functionality is added with upgrades. These include navigation, Nissan Connect apps, etc.

The infotainment system in the Rogue is barely average compared to the offerings elsewhere in this segment. Functionality is simple, straightforward, and easy to understand, but limited.

The Rogue also features advanced safety and convenience features including Nissan's new ProPilot Assist system. These are available in upper trim points. ProPilot works in conjunction with stop-start-capable adaptive cruise control to not only keep a following distance, but also stay centered in the lane and act as emergency backup should the driver be unresponsive during highway driving with the ProPilot system activated.

Fuel Economy (10/10)

The 2019 Nissan Rogue is EPA-rated at 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway in front-wheel drive models and 25/32 mpg city/highway in all-wheel drive models. The 2019 Rogue Hybrid model is EPA-rated at up to 33 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway.

Predicted Reliability, Initial Quality Ratings (8/10)

The 2019 Rogue is rated by the J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study as "About Average" while the Hybrid model is rated as "Better Than Most." There have been no safety recalls for the Rogue this model year and Consumer Reports gives similar expectations for dependability.

Safety (9/10)

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given the 2019 Rogue an overall rating of four stars out of five. The Rogue received four stars each for frontal and rollover crash tests and five stars for side crash tests.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has rated the 2019 Nissan Rogue with top scores of "Good" on all crash tests conducted as well as a "Superior" rating for front crash prevention technologies (if equipped).

Performance (7/10)

The 2019 Nissan Rogue is not known for its sportiness or adept handling. It's relatively sluggish, in fact, compared to what's become the norm for the small crossover-SUV segment. The Rogue is powered by a four-cylinder engine that outputs 170 horsepower to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). That CVT is tuned specifically towards fuel economy. Front-wheel drive in the Rogue is the default, all-wheel drive is optional.

Driving the Rogue is not engaging or fun, but it's not meant to be. This is a practical vehicle, not a sports car, and it is designed as such. Only during hard acceleration or quick maneuvering does the Rogue's lack of aplomb really hurt it. For everyday driving, the 2019 Nissan Rogue feels competent and capable. Comfort levels are enhanced by the soft, quiet ride and lack of engine intrusion to the cabin.

The Rogue Hybrid model uses a similar four-cylinder engine coupled to an electric motor for a total output of 176 horsepower. A CVT and front-wheel drive also come standard. The Rogue Hybrid does have the ability to travel for very short distances at up to 75 mph in electric-only mode and has good MPG estimates as a result. Handling and driving characteristics are very similar to those of the standard gas model.

Pricing and Value (9/10)

The 2019 Nissan Rogue has a very good value proposition at most of its trim point levels. Most consumers will find their sweet spot in the well-equipped, mid-level SV trim, which includes several upgrade options to match budgets and needs. Even with that, however, the top-most trim, the SL, is cheaper than comparable options from other makes.

The Rogue is well-priced across the line, though, and many dealerships and Nissan themselves are offering incentives on the hood. Sales in 2019 are slower than they were last year, adding more reason for those incentives to be offered.

Total Score and Competitive Comparison (68/80, 85%)

The most competitive rival to the 2019 Nissan Rogue is the Honda CR-V. Similarly designed for roominess and versatility, the CR-V offers a slightly peppier drive and a more modern infotainment system. Visibility is also better in the Honda, but it's priced a bit higher than the Nissan for comparable amenities and not as comfortable for the longer drive.

Also competitive with the 2019 Rogue is the newly-redone Toyota RAV4, which is now more contemporary in design and which offers a more robust powertrain and more capable off-road and all-weather trim options.

The 2019 Nissan Rogue remains the best-seller in the compact-SUV segment and there's good reason for it to stay there. The market is very competitive, however, and buyers should shop around for what fits their lifestyle, need, and budget the best. There are few slouches in this competitive arena and it's worth looking at every option. After that, many will still find themselves gravitating towards the all-boxes-checked Nissan Rogue as their choice.
