Overview (Final Score: A)

The Ford F-150 is the best-selling pickup truck in America and has held that title for decades. The truck saw a refresh in 2017 and for the 2019 model year, it gains a new diesel engine plus the addition of a high-output engine to the Limited package. Ford has also added advanced safety equipment to all F-150 models as standard equipment.

The 2019 Ford F-150 is a big, spacious, full-sized pickup truck that is offered in a myriad of trim levels with several engine options, cab and bed size options, and customization choices.

The key changes mentioned above augment the F-150's considerable lineup. The 2019 F-150 has three cab style choices, three bed lengths for cargo, and six engine choices. Most of which are available as options in the six trim level choices for the F-150. It's a lot to choose from, but this level of configuration and optioning is a large part of what makes this Ford pickup truck so popular. There is almost assuredly an F-150 to match most any need.

What We Love About the 2019 Ford F-150:

  • Very good towing and payload ratings for the class

  • Plentiful engine choices mean there's a powertrain match for any job

  • Wide-ranging technology and comfort options available

What We Don't Love About the 2019 Ford F-150:

  • Highway ride can be stiff when unloaded

  • Fuel economy estimates don't always translate into the real world, especially with the turbocharged options

  • Learning curve for towing, especially for experienced haulers

Exterior View (10/10)

Each of the major pickup truck makers has a different approach to design for visual effect. Ford trends towards a straight-forward, no-nonsense look that drops the general bulkiness and musculature often emphasized in others. The F-150 is upscale-appearing because of this simplicity, oddly enough, and it's clear-cut body lines accent that feel.

The 2019 model year sees no change in the bodywork or design of the F-150, carrying the changes made last year. A new grille, stronger bumper line, and rear tailgate smoothing were changed then and carry over. Again, the changes largely simplified the F-150's look and gave it a simpler design language for more appeal. The flat-nosed pickup truck elements are still there, as are the boxes and edges that go with that. But the Ford manages to look more luxurious than its competitors anyway.

Much of the simplicity of the F-150's current design language comes from Ford's choice of materials. This-generation of the F-150 was introduced in 2015 with aluminum as the primary material in the bodywork. The stamped appearance of the current-generation F-150 comes from that and, indeed, accents the fact.

Interior Comfort, Quality, Ergonomics (9/10)

The interior of the 2019 Ford F-150 is very spacious and well laid out. Much of its appeal is in its daily use excellence. An intelligent controls layout is thoughtfully augmented with technology that aids instead of confusing. Interior comfort only increases as trim levels climb.

The various cab configurations offer different backseat accommodations. The single cab, clearly, has no back seat while the SuperCab offers a minimal, but functional back seat option. The SuperCrew has a very large back seat that rivals that of any full-sized SUV and that easily outclasses even the largest of full-sized sedans. In both size and comfort. Three adults across is possible without shoulder bumping. Which is why pickup trucks are often replacements for large sedans in today's market.

2019-ford-f-150-interior-1

Materials quality in the F-150 is very good, but improves with trim points. Lower trim levels have basic, plain, but good quality setups. The mid-trims are more appealing for most consumers, though, and the upper-level posh trims like the Limited are well into the luxury category for their poshness.

Finally, the 2019 Ford F-150 has large side windows, big mirrors, and a large back window. All of which come together to make this one of the more maneuverable pickups on the market thanks to all that visibility for the driver.

Technology (10/10)

Sporting the new Sync3 infotainment interface, the 2019 F-150 features some of the best infotainment in today's market. The base model F-150s have almost no technology in them, but mid- and upper trim levels have plenty.

Sync3 is easy to use, has a crisp and clear screen, and uses virtual buttons large enough to match a pickup truck. Updates to the system are made via a WiFi connection the user can set up--using either a smartphone hotspot or a home WiFi network. This allows easy upgrades as Ford releases them and continually improves the system. It also allows map updates and other items as they're added.

The menu layouts in Sync 3 are nicely done and voice commands are easy to operate with natural language. A trailer backing system is available to aid maneuvering a trailer into place. This aids those without the experience or using very small trailers not easily visible through the truck's mirrors to use the infotainment system to place the trailer where it's needed.

Fuel Economy (10/10)

The 2019 Ford F-150 has some of the best possible fuel economy returns on the full-sized truck market. It also bests many midsized trucks for MPG returns. Some EPA estimates, however, may not match the real world for some drivers. MPG ratings are very subjective with pickup trucks.

The standard V6 engine in the F-150 is EPA rated at 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. Both of the standard turbocharged six-cylinder options also return good numbers at 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The upgrade turbo engine is rated at 15 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway. Finally, the larger V8 engine option brings 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway.

The new diesel engine offers 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, per the EPA.

Our real world testing of the upgraded 3.5-liter turbo engine, rated at 15/18, returned less than that at a 14 mpg overall return (combining both city and highway driving over a week). As with most fuel economy returns, however, many factors change things. The Limited model we drove was heavy with luxury items and an off-road component was included in our overall assessment. Other models might have smaller cabs, smaller fuel tanks (ours was 36 gallons), less off-road gear (or none at all), etc.

Predicted Reliability, Initial Quality Ratings (8/10)

The 2019 Ford F-150 is retaining its reliability ratings from last year. J.D. Power and Associates still rates the F-150 as "About Average" in its Vehicle Dependability Study results. One minor recall has been undertaken for the 2019 Ford for an engine block heater, which may not apply to most trucks sold.

Safety (10/10)

The 2019 F-150 retains its high safety ratings from last year, keeping this generation of the truck on track as a safe choice. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given the F-150 a 5-Star overall rating with five (out of five) stars each for frontal and side crash tests and four stars for rollover tests.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has similarly rated the F-150 well. The 2019 F-150 received top scores of "Good" on all crash testing and a "Superior" rating for its advanced crash avoidance systems.

Performance (10/10)

Because the F-150 can be configured so many different ways, it's possible to tune the truck to any given performance metric desired. Performance expectations should therefore be tuned towards the setup of the truck in question.

Powertrain options for the F-150 include several six-cylinder engine choices, including a highly-charged turbo engine for the Raptor and Limited models, a V8 engine, and a diesel option. Every engine has a rear-wheel or four-wheel drive option.

The base engine is a 3.3-liter V6 that outputs 290 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque in a broad curve. This runs through a six-speed automatic transmission and makes for a good general duty pickup with fuel economy as a primary goal.

2019-ford-f-150-bed

A 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 offers 325 horses and 400 lb-ft of torque. A 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 is also available, bringing 375 hp and 470 lb-ft. Both pair with a ten-speed automatic transmission. The 3.5L V6 can be pumped to 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet in the Limited and Raptor models. The beefy 5.0-liter V8 option gives 395 hp and 400 lb-ft with the same ten-speed.

New this year is a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel engine that outputs 250 horses and 440 pound-feet. This also pairs with a ten-speed automatic to combine both fuel economy and capability.

Tow and haul ratings vary by powertrain choice and off-road capability varies with packaging options. The FX-4 and Raptor models offer the most off-road while the 4x4-equipped models offer moderate off-pavement capability with less aggressive tires and suspension.

Pricing and Value (9/10)

Because the Ford F-150 is so configurable, finding the right match for a buyer's needs and wants is relatively easy. For most consumers, though, the Lariat package in rear-wheel or 4x4 will match most needs. Coupled with the base V6 or the 3.5-liter upgrade, it becomes a good general-duty pickup truck with both daily driving comfort and weekend warrior truck capability. Those who don't need the towing and hauling of the 3.5 can certainly stay with the base V6 for better MPG returns.

Resale values in the F-150, while good, are very powertrain-specific. The above configuration with the 3.5L or V8 engines holds the best resale value with the exception of the Raptor model. The diesel is yet to be determined, but will also likely show good resale potential.

Total Score and Competitive Comparison (76/80, 95%)

The 2019 Ford F-150 is one of our highest-rated vehicles. It competes in a strong pickup truck market full of full-sized, stiff competition. Others on offer are the Ram 1500 with its excellent interior and highway ride, the Chevrolet Silverado and its GMC Sierra twin with good daily drive metrics and upscale appeal, the Nissan Titan with its muscular appearance, and the staid and true Toyota Tundra.

Comparisons are fleeting and difficult to give as most of the differences boil down to need, budget, and style preferences. The 2019 Ford F-150 is a competitive best-seller for a reason and its myriad of configuration options and choices makes it the benchmark against which others are compared.
