The 2019 Envision has been updated a bit for the new model year, but retains the Envision's focus on two-row crossover-SUV comfort. The 2019 Buick Envision is a right-sized premium family hauler with a good everyday appeal and strong daily usefulness. The Envision hits the mark for most buyers by not over-focusing on any one metric.

For the 2019 model year, the new Envision sees a few changes. A restyled front end and changes to the tail lamps are obvious. Some interior changes were also made, mostly to aid ergonomics and comfort. A new, and much-recommended, turbocharged engine and better automatic transmission are also added this year.

The 2019 Buick Envision is a two-row premium family crossover with an excellent array of versatility and usefulness. It's comfortable, quiet, and mannered. Our tests also showed it to be fairly safe in inclement driving conditions as well.

Exterior View (9/10)

The Envision is a good-looking crossover-SUV with contemporary styling. It's not standout for its looks, but neither is it ugly. Where it does grab attention, though, is where it matters with an SUV in today's market. The upscale appeal of the Envision is enhanced by changes made for the 2019 model year.

The front fascia of the 2019 Buick Envision is now more appealing thanks to a slightly revised nose, with less protrusion, and changes to the headlamps and grille to match. This gives the Envision a slightly flatter face for most robust appeal without changing the overall luxuriousness of the general design for the crossover.

The raked windscreen and tilting body lines on the 2019 Envision add some speed to the crossover while the oversized side mirrors and notched rear pillar give the Buick a promise of good visibility for the driver. Wheel options are also good all around, giving the Envision some bling at the curb.

Interior Comfort, Quality, Ergonomics (9/10)

The 2019 Envision offers an interior that's commensurate with the Buick line, showcasing simplified comfort and excellent use of materials. The Buick Envision is on par with any entry level luxury vehicle and feels modern inside. Standard features like dual-zone climate and rear parking sensors are a plus, as is the IntelliLink infotainment system with its 8-inch touchscreen.

Seating in the Envision is nicely done with good comfort for the driver and front passenger. Both the cloth and the leatherette upholstery in the 2019 Envision are well done and don't feel cheap. The leather upholstery is also good. Heated front seating is standard with ventilated/cooled seating as an upgrade option in some trims. A heated steering wheel and heated rear seating are also optional.

The rear bench in the 2019 Buick Envision is done well with good comfort levels in the outboard seating and enough room in the middle for an adult on short trips. Parents will appreciate the anchoring options for child safety seats, though the LATCH anchors are a bit buried and require a little pushing to get a connection. Seating in the rear of the Envision is also spacious in terms of knee and legroom as well as headroom.

That rear seat roominess comes at the price of a smaller cargo area than might be found in some competing crossovers. There are 26.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, which is below average, but that expands to a roomy 57.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Those split-fold rear seats are standard and they slide forward and backward as well, adding an inch or two to the behind-seat cargo space if required. Remote release handles to drop the rear seats forward are standard, adding some helpful ergonomics to the cargo area.

Technology (10/10)

Technology in the 2019 Buick Envision is based on the IntellinLink infotainment system with its 8-inch touchscreen. All standard equipment in the Envision. Also standard are two USB ports (expanding to four in some packages) and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Upgrade options include a better stereo from Bose and some driver assist tech like adaptive cruise and a head-up display. A wireless charging pad, semi-automated parking assistance, and other items are also available in the Envision.

The IntelliLink system is easy to navigate and use and features a lot of good technology. Integrating a connected smartphone is relatively easy, whether it be for Bluetooth connections or for Auto/CarPlay use. Hands-free operation with voice control are well done in the Envision.

Fuel Economy (8/10)

The 2019 Buick Envision has two engine options. The base engine is EPA-rated at 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. That's about average for the class when comparing base engines in the four-cylinder range.

The upgrade engine for the 2019 Envision is a turbocharged four-cylinder that has an EPA rating of 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. Our week with this version of the Envision, in all-wheel drive, returned an average of about 21 mpg overall. That's just under expectations.

Predicted Reliability, Initial Quality Ratings (9/10)

The 2019 Envision has not yet received reliability ratings from any respected source for that information. It's largely unchanged, in terms of its design, from 2018, however, and in that year it received very good ratings. The J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study rated the 2019 Envision as "Better Than Most" for expected reliability. We believe that the Envision will carry that forward to 2019.

Safety (10/10)

The 2019 Buick Envision has received good scores from crash test results by both testing bodies. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the Envision five stars overall (out of five) for crashworthiness, including four stars each for frontal and rollover results and five stars for side crash test results.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has given the 2019 Envision top scores of "Good" on all crash tests conducted. In addition, the Envision received a second-best score of "Advanced" for its crash avoidance technologies (if equipped).

Performance (9/10)

The base engine for the 2019 Envision is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit running to a six-speed automatic transmission. This combination is underwhelming, as we learned in previous renditions of the Envision. We recommend moving to a package that adds the upgrade engine for the Envision for better everyday performance.

The upgrade engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that's been turbocharged to produce 252 horsepower (compared to 197 hp for the 2.5L). This runs through a new and very well-done nine-speed automatic transmission that shifts quickly and seamlessly. More importantly, though, the new engine produces 35 more pound-feet of torque (295) than it did before (260). This delivers better power to the wheels and more confidence from the get-go.

On the road, the 2019 Envision is predictable and easy to operate. It's not a sports car or fast-paced handler by any means, but for the market it's aimed towards, it's a good fit. The Envision offers a good sense of direction and feel, with intuitive returns to steering and braking. It's a well-mannered crossover with everyday tuning.

When the going gets rough, the Envision offers no "drive modes" or other gadgets for improving traction. Instead, it adjusts its all-wheel drive system to accommodate on the fly, which can make some winter driving a bit hairy. Unless the roads are very slick, however, most drivers will find that the 2019 Envision handles itself very well in inclement weather.

Pricing and Value (8/10)

The Envision comes with a lot of goodies for the price being paid, at least when looking past the base level offering. The base model is well-equipped, but when compared to similarly-equipped rivals outside of premium brands, it's not as compelling. In the Premium and Premium II trims, however, the engine upgrade and added comfort and tech items are worth the price being paid. This puts the Envision on a level commensurate with some luxury offerings at similar price points.

Total Score and Competitive Comparison (72/80, 90%)

The 2019 Buick Envision competes in a market with several excellent options for two-row crossover luxury. Its closest competitors are the Volvo XC60, which is generally higher priced, but which offers far more luxury and dynamics than does the Buick. The Acura RDX is a sportier option than the Envision, bringing excellent road appeal and unusually astute all-weather capability. Also competing against the Buick is the Lincoln MKC, which is more luxurious by comparison, but not as ergonomic.

We find that the 2019 Buick Envision is a well-designed, all-around crossover-SUV that competes well in a class where most tend towards specialization. The Envision offers nothing headline-grabbing, but it does everything expected of it well enough to be considered nicely rounded. We like the mixture of comfort and economy in the Envision's interior and the good everyday road dynamics it offers.
