Overview (Final Score: A)
The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette is a combination of sexy looks and interior refinement that is many leagues ahead of its previous generations and their emphasis on beauty without finesse. The classic curves that make the ‘Vette what it is are all there, focusing on the lustful hourglass Americans have come to love this car for.

Through time, the Corvette has gone from being a beautiful machine with a handful of ponies under the hood to becoming an icon of American sports car excellence. The 2015 Corvette is the epitome of what the car can become, yet still be attainable for everyday folk. The new look for the Corvette is sexy, powerful, and (finally) young. Love for this car's appeal is universal; with even those who do not necessarily like the Corvette turning their heads to nod acknowledgement of its newfound curvature and exhaust note.

At all price points and performance levels, the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette brings plenty to the table and competes with the sporty excellence hitherto monopolized by European and Japanese names. When introduced in this new-generation (C7), the Corvette won the North American Car of the Year award and then was a top three finalist in the 2014 World Performance Car of the Year in a very rare nod from the Europeans to an American car.

What We Loved About the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette

  • Strikingly beautiful design.

  • Beautiful drive dynamics in every situation.

  • Strong value proposition at nearly all levels.

What We Didn't Love About the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette

  • Lower trims have a few interior quality issues.

  • Safety record is unknown for this generation.

Exterior View (10/10 relative to market)
The new-generation Corvette debuted in 2014 and was an instant hit. The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette carries that style that has all of the elements of a beautiful sports coupe with a distinctly American flare. The look is powerful enough to give a lot of credence to the Corvette's shapely past yet suave and sophisticated enough to have a place on European roads. The C7-generation Corvette is the first to be built and sold in Europe and it's been well-accepted there, winning accolades for its great looks.

The 2015 Corvette begins with what has made all ‘Vettes since the 1950s look good: the sexy curves of an hourglass. The front of the Corvette is sharp and low, with high humps for the wheel wells and a shapely, but not fat hood. Behind the front wheels, the body shape begins to pinch with contours and the signature lowered, curved beltline creates the hourglass before the wide flare and powerful hips of the rear fenders and fastback finish the design.

From side-on, looking directly at the car, the pinched belt creates the hourglass. From above, looking back from hood to fender, the Corvette still has that shape, with the wide flare of the front and rear fenders creating the hourglass pinch at the doors. The only word to fully describe the look of the 2015 Corvette is "sexy." The car is much too sophisticated to have an "a" in that word, but still attainable enough that it's more like the pageant queen rather than the unattainable magazine cover girl.

Interior Comfort, Quality, Ergonomics (9/10)
The Corvette has not been noted for its great interiors in the past, but with the introduction of the new-generation, things have changed inside the ‘Vette. The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette is very upscale inside as well as out. The two-seat sports car has a more "cockpit" styled interior with a lot of focus on the driver and more comfort than any fan of previous-generation Corvettes might expect in either seat.

Materials quality is excellent, though there are a few touches in the workmanship in some trim levels that show the factory pacing in the build of this car. Sometimes, lines just don't quite pair up after the seam, especially in the lower trims along the dashboard's flow. This was the only thing we could see in our tour of a suite of Corvette trims, though.

In the upper trims, such as the much-loved Stingray, that is not the case. Everything is well-shaped, nicely formed, and beautifully made. Seating is excellent, especially in the sport packages with their added bolstering and firm control.

Controls for the driver are all within easy reach and the learning curve for the extra dials and buttons, including the heads-up display and responsive instruments, is quick. Storage is also good, with the hatchback design of the coupe having plenty, even with the optional hard top panels removed and stored. The convertible has a comparatively large trunk as well.

Technology (9/10)
Chevrolet has come a long way with their infotainment system and interfaces. The MyLink interface is much more user-friendly than it was just a year or two ago and the 2015 Corvette comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen in the center stack. The gauge cluster has another 8-inch display that's customizable and that changes with drive mode selection and with the use of some apps like the Performance Data Recorder (PDR).

Smartphone integration is fairly easy to set up and use and options like the use of Pandora and other phone-centered services are great.

Technology for the driver is also a boon in the new Corvette. Standard on all 2015 Corvette models is the drive mode selector with five options: Weather, Eco, Tour, Sport and Track. These change steering and stability as well as transmission vectors for various types of control in various situations.

The PDR system mentioned earlier is an excellent way for performance fans to record what they're doing in the car. It records not only the forward-facing camera, but also overlays various instrument and timing points on the video (all user-selectable) as well as, if desired, audio from the internal Bluetooth mics in the cabin. Various modes for recording 0-60, quarter mile, and 0-100 times are available as well as lap settings and timers, G-forces, and more. It takes some time to learn it all, but it's well worth the effort and makes for fun souvenirs for family and friends who might ride along occasionally. Data can be recorded to an SD card (in the glove box) or USB storage. The former allows you to lock away the data card so that when the car is in valet mode, recording what the valets do with it, they cannot easily gain access to the evidence. Another smart addition.

That same valet mode allows the driver to set a PIN before handing over the keys, limiting the Corvette's performance until the pin is entered again.

Fuel Economy (10/10)
For a big, lightweight V8-powered sports coupe, the 2015 Corvette gets respectable fuel economy. Most models receive an EPA rating of 21 mpg combined with the manual transmission installed and 20 mpg combined with the new eight-speed automatic. Higher-performance trims, like the powerful Z06 model, return 18 mpg combined and 16 mpg combined in manual or automatic respectively. The standard "street models" of the ‘Vette are capable of 29 mpg on the highway, making this one of the most fuel-efficient sports cars you can buy.

Although not published, we believe that the convertible models likely return slightly lower MPG numbers due to the added weight and less aerodynamic build they inherently have with the automated cloth top.

Predicted Reliability, Initial Quality Ratings (9/10)
The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette has undergone three recalls since production began. One for suspension, another for the parking brake, and one for the airbag recalls General Motors has been undergoing for some time. The latter two recalls were conducted in September of 2014 and the suspension recall happened in January of 2015. Most vehicles on the road now should have been serviced for these recalls.

Outside of those issues, the J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study rating for the 2015 ‘Vette is above average, in the "Better Than Most" category. The 2015 Corvette comes standard with a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty and 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Safety (8/10)
Thus far, the 2015 Corvette has not undergone crash testing by either the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Although this new-generation Corvette has not undergone crash testing, anecdotal information about the car indicates that it will do very well and the included suite of passenger safety equipment bodes well for the car's performance in an accident.

Performance (10/10)
There is little to complain about in the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette in terms of performance. Even the base model returns excellent numbers. The 2015 Corvette is powered by a 6.2-liter V8 that outputs 455 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. Adding the performance exhaust system boosts those numbers by 5 each. A seven-speed manual transmission is standard and a new eight-speed automatic transmission is optional.

In a Corvette Stingray Z51, we achieved sub-5-second 0-60 mph times easily, without a rolling start and from idle. Four-second times are possible in this configuration of the car.

The performance-oriented "track ready" 2015 Corvette is the Z06 model, of course, which adds supercharging to the 6.2L, pushing it to 650 horses and 650 pound-feet. The performance exhaust treatment is included and the same two transmissions are available. Here, the Corvette Z06 becomes capable of 3-second 0-60 times with 11-second quarter mile runs.

As for the driving experience, there are few cars as nimble-feeling and capable as a Corvette of this new generation. The 2015 ‘Vette rides well, smashes corners without effort, and is thoroughly enjoyable to drive down a quiet suburban street or ripping along a deserted highway in the countryside. Handling is excellent and road-hugging is superb in the 2015 Corvette. Even long trips are comfortable, despite this being a sports car, and with the top down and windows up, conversations are possible in the cabin even at highway speeds.

Pricing and Value (9/10)
The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette is one of the more value-oriented premium sports coupes on the market. The base model begins at around $55,000 and comes well-equipped for daily driving and good performance. Upgrades in the coupe lineup of the Corvette run through three trim points in each major model (1LT, 2LT, 3LT) with the Convertible, Stingray (sometimes with a Z51 performance moniker), and Z06 models having each of those trims. The volume selling model is the Stingray, which starts at around $60,000 in either the Coupe or Convertible option.

These price points include a lot of refinement and interior upgrades that add plenty of value for the dollars spent. Given that the sports car categories are rarely value-conscious in terms of interior trim, the 2015 Corvette is a welcome change with fittings that put it in contention with much higher-priced vehicles in the same market.

We drove a very well-fitted 2015 Corvette Stingray Convertible 2LT ZF1 with options such as the Multi-mode Performance Exhaust, Carbon Fiber Interior package, Performance Data, 8-speed automatic transmission, and Kalahari leather interior. Priced, after delivery, at $71,255, this was a very well-packaged sports car given the excellent fit, finish, and performance it gave.

Total Score and Competitive Comparison (74/80, 88%)
The 2015 Corvette ranks solidly as an "A" in our book and is one of the best sports cars you can get on today's market. The price versus performance and interior quality are hard to beat. Having driven vehicles like the 2016 Jaguar F-TYPE R and other high-end sports convertibles, the 2015 Corvette ranks right among them in terms of performance, driving experience, and interior fit and finish. Those other higher-priced cars have their additions that make the money worthwhile to those who'll spend it, but for attainable excellence, the Corvette stands alone.

Other vehicles in this price range do deliver their own brands of fun style, though, and shouldn't be ignored. The Dodge Challenger Hellcat is similarly-priced and has far more going on under the hood, but cannot compete on the corners. The aforementioned Jaguar F-TYPE R Convertible closes in on double the price of a Stingray, but includes European refinements and all-wheel drive cornering power that are just out of reach of the ‘Vette. Other American "pony" cars like the Ford Mustang suffer similar downsides that the Dodge includes, but have more daily practicality than a two-seat car can offer.

In the end, the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette stands alone and without peer in the affordable class of sports coupes and convertibles without going to a European nameplate. By price-comparison, even then the competitor may not be as value-aware as is the Corvette and the refinement points may seem a bit nitpicky. None can lay claim to the beautiful design that the Corvette offers.
