Overview

The Toyota Tundra consistently ranks at the top in various categories when compared to similar full-size trucks. It holds the top spot for the best resale value, outperforming 10 other models. It also ranks first in providing the best value for money, surpassing 6 other trucks. Furthermore, it is rated as the best full-size truck overall, beating 10 other competitors. This suggests that the Toyota Tundra offers superior performance, value, and longevity in the full-size truck category.

Overview

The 2013 Toyota Tundra is a full-size pickup truck that has no significant changes for the 2013 model year. A capable workhorse, the Tundra boasts strong V8 engines, good towing capability, rugged good looks and a variety of available packages.

What Experts Think

Among automotive reviewers, there continues to be solid approval for the workhorse ability of the 2013 Toyota Tundra, although it is in need of a redesign. Strong and fuel-efficient V8 engines and good (but not class-leading) towing capacity, and variety of optional packages are seen as pluses, but the interior is generally regarded as plain and not as refined as some of Tundra's major competitors.

"Backed by Toyota's enviable reputation for safety and reliability, the 2013 Tundra is a genuine workhorse with impressive towing capabilities, rugged construction and first-class interior accommodations." (Kelley Blue Book)

Over at Consumer Reports, editors say the six-speed automatic is "very smooth and responsive," handling "relatively responsive," but TRD package ride is "stiff." Other pluses include roomy cabin (although a long reach to some controls), "extremely capable" towing performance, and above-average reliability.

Refinement isn't a word that's associated with the 2013 Toyota Tundra, in the opinion of Edmunds, which comments that the full-size Tundra "is notably outdated." Ride quality is "comparably choppy" and behind the times. In addition, editors note that the Tundra feels big, not smaller and more maneuverable like some redesigned rivals.

"It's hard to find fault with the Tundra's towing and hauling capabilities, especially when equipped with its top-spec, 5.7-liter V8," notes Car and Driver. It's a different story for appearance, interior refinement, driving characteristics, and breadth of choice, where "the dated Tundra fails to match the domestic-branded full-size trucks."

Cars.com notes that the CrewMax is "the largest cab in the half-ton segment, since Chrysler discontinued the Mega Cab option for the Ram 1500."

What Owners Say

Among owners of the 2013 Toyota Tundra commenting on sites such as Cars.com, Edmunds, Yahoo Autos and others, there is fairly universal approval for the truck's basic attributes: good looks, fun to drive, roominess, towing ability, sound system, price and quality.

Other favorable comments are posted for the well-placed and easy-to-see dash instruments, memory package, navigation system and backup camera.

The most-often cited complaint is for poor gas mileage, as well as a small, 22-gallon fuel tank. A few commented that it takes some getting used to in order to drive a full-size truck like the Toyota Tundra - but they also are quick to add that it doesn't take all that long to feel right at home behind the wheel.

Apparently Tundra owners aren't nearly as picky as the auto critics when it comes to the interior of the truck being somewhat dated. But, after all, if consumers are happy with their purchase, that's really what matters.

Model/Trim Lineup

The 2013 Toyota Tundra is a full-size pickup that is offered in three body styles, three different wheelbases and three bed lengths. Body styles include the two-door regular cab, extended four-door double cab and four-door crew cab Toyota calls the CrewMax.

Three trim levels include the base Tundra, Limited and Platinum.

Standard equipment on the base Tundra includes 18-inch steel wheels, chrome bumpers, full power accessories, cruise control, heated mirrors, windshield wiper de-icer, dual-zone climate control, cloth upholstery, a 40/20/40-split bench seat, tilt-only steering wheel, damped tailgate, and a four-speaker stereo with a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack.

Optional features include Bluetooth, USB port, satellite radio and Toyota's Entune, which includes HD Radio and a backup camera. Other features as extra-cost options include a 12-speaker JBL audio system, power sunroof, retractable rear window, and a rear-seat entertainment system.

The equipment list on the double cab adds keyless entry, intermittent windshield wipers, manually-adjustable driver's seat, 60/40-split fold-up rear seats, and a six-speaker sound system (same system as the base Tundra but with two additional speakers).

The entry-level CrewMax tacks on a vertical sliding rear window and a rear seat that slides, reclines and folds flat.

The Limited trim is next and is only available on double cab and CrewMax body styles. This trim gets a color-keyed front bumper, 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, power-folding and auto-dimming mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, front bucket seats with 10-way driver and four-way passenger power, heated front seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with built-in backup camera display, tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a JBL premium audio system with six-CD changer (10 speakers in double cab and 12 in the CrewMax). Upgraded gauges, a trip computer and a bed rail system with adjustable tie-down cleats are also included.

Only the CrewMax offers the Platinum trim. This top-line trim gets heated and auto-dimming power folding mirrors, a sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, perforated leather upholstery, memory functions for the driver's seat, a navigation system with touchscreen interface, voice controls and real-time traffic. Other standard Platinum features include 20-inch wheels and specific chrome exterior treatments.

An optional rear-seat entertainment system is available only on Platinum and CrewMax models.

As with most full-size trucks, note reviewers, the number and variety of optional packages can be dizzying. There are packages for towing, a Work Truck package, styling-oriented packages, and off-road packages.

Performance

With three different engines, including two V8s, the 2013 Toyota Tundra has a powertrain that will fit most needs. But, according to many in the motoring press, there's no good reason to choose the base V6 when the more powerful and fuel-efficient V8s, at least in the smaller of the V8 engines, provide superior performance.

The 2013 Toyota Tundra is available with either rear-wheel drive (RWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD).

The base engine in the regular and double cab RWD Tundra is a 4.0-liter V6 that delivers 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. Matched with a five-speed automatic transmission, this setup achieves an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 16 mpg city/20 mpg highway/17 mpg combined.

The smaller of the two V8 engines is a 327-horsepower 4.6-liter V8 that produces 327 pound-feet of torque. This engine is standard on CrewMax, four-wheel drive and long-bed models and is available as an option on rear-wheel drive regular and double cab models. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard. EPA-estimated fuel economy for this engine is 15/20/17 mpg (RWD) and 14/19/16 mpg (4WD).

The most-powerful V8 engine is the 5.7-liter V8 that pumps out 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. The 5.7-liter V8 is standard on Tundra Limited and Platinum models and optional on other models. As for fuel economy, it's estimated at 13/18/15 mpg (RWD) and 13/17/15 mpg (4WD). Most auto critics favor this engine, saying it is sharp and responsive, with passing power to rival some luxury sedans - even when towing.

Properly equipped with the optional tow package, the 5.7-liter V8-powered Tundra can tow up to 10,400 pounds. That is more than 1,000 pounds shy of the maximum towing capacity of some of the Tundra's competition.

Interior

In the view of most automotive reviewers, the 2013 Toyota Tundra is functional, although not necessarily in step with the times. Others mention the hollow and cheap-feel of plastics on the doors and dash.

But controls and buttons are mostly intuitive and can be operated while wearing gloves - a must for some drivers using Tundra as a work truck. And the controls function well, another plus.

Depending on the configuration of the cab, the Tundra can seat three to six people. Overall, say reviewers, the seats are fairly comfortable. The Double Cab is considered one of the most rear-passenger friendly extended cabs in the large truck segment.

Forward-mounted hinges in the Double Cab make it easier to access the rear quarters. And as for the CrewMax cab - that's deemed "incredibly" spacious. Not only is legroom copious, but the reclining seatbacks makes sitting there very comfortable.

The biggest problem with the Tundra's interior is in comparison to its competitors from Ford, Chevrolet, GMC and Ram half-ton pickups - all of which have been redesigned or freshened since 2007.

Tundra offers good interior storage space, say reviewers, with the Double Cab and CrewMax cabs providing plenty of space to haul large items in the back seat. Fold up the bench seat and there's even more storage space.

Safety & Reliability

Standard safety equipment on the 2013 Toyota Tundra includes antilock brakes with brake assist, stability control, traction control, trailer sway control, front side-impact airbags, and side curtain airbags covering both rows and front knee airbags. A backup camera is optional (or part of a package).

In government crash tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2013 Toyota Tundra earned an overall four-star score, including four stars for overall frontal protection and five stars for side-impact tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Tundra its highest "Good" rating in frontal-offset, side impact and roof strength tests and named it a Top Safety Pick.

As for reliability, the 2013 Toyota Tundra received a four circle score in the J.D. Power Predicted Reliability rating. A four Power Circle rating is "Better Than Most."

Consumer Reports also notes that reliability for the 2013 Toyota Tundra has been above average.
