Overview

The Ford Edge holds a respectable position in the midsize SUV category. It ranks 5th out of 16 on the Best Midsize SUVs for the Money list, indicating that it offers good value for its cost. Furthermore, when compared to other American-made midsize SUVs, the Ford Edge performs even better, securing the 5th position out of 13. This suggests that among its American counterparts, the Ford Edge is a top contender, offering a blend of quality and value. Overall, these rankings reflect positively on the Ford Edge, suggesting it is a competitive choice in its category.

Overview

Despite plenty of competition, the 2013 Ford Edge midsize crossover SUV manages to come out a winner, especially for families looking for a good compromise between a larger and more fuel-thirsty SUV with a third row and a smaller, possibly less powerful one. The Edge has three engine choices, good room and easy access to the interior, along with numerous standard and available comfort and high-tech features. Freshened for 2011 and the Ford 240-horsepower EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder engine added for 2012, the five-passenger Edge is mostly unchanged for 2013.

What Experts Think

In the view of many automotive reviewers, the 2013 Ford Edge offers much in the way of standard and available features that a five-passenger family could want. Performance is highly touted, especially in the fuel-sipping turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Handling is another area where the Edge delivers: a composed and smooth ride, in most trims (not the Sport, which has a rougher ride).

"The Edge has good interior space, easy access, and sprightly engines, in either its V6 or new for 2012 turbocharged four-cylinder versions. The overall package falls short, though, due to so-so refinement and driving dynamics." (Consumer Reports)

"Front- or four-wheel drive, the Edge is competent, comfortable and quiet, but short on excitement and speed." (Car and Driver)

"This crossover has an ‘edge' on its competition by offering roomy interior accommodations, great cargo flexibility, and pleasing road manners." (Consumer Guide)

"The Ford Edge offers a balanced ride, multiple engine choices, and a wide range of tech and amenity options that can morph it from a sub-$30,000 family hauler to a powerful, blinged-out machine reaching over $45,000." (Kelley Blue Book)

"Thanks to its well-rounded nature, the 2013 Ford Edge is one of the top choices for a midsize crossover SUV." (Edmunds)

What Owners Say

Overall, the feeling among owners who commented on various automotive review sites about their experience with the 2013 Ford Edge is positive. Owners like the styling, roominess, ride and handling, quietness of the cabin, and value for the money. Complaints are about gas mileage (in V6 models), stiff seats, complexity of the MyFord Touch system, and a few other nits here and there.

Numerous owner reviews in Kelley Blue Book compliment the 2013 Ford Edge for its style, gadgetry, fun, all-wheel drive, smooth ride, great looks, "super comfy" interior, controls and roominess. Negative comments include some difficulty navigating blind spots (with blind-spot monitoring0, noise, problems with Ford Synch, less gas mileage than expected, and that the Edge is expensive to upgrade from SE to SEL. Overall, the 2013 Ford Edge received an 8.6 out of 10 rating.

Twelve consumer reviews in Edmunds averaged five stars with owners generally praising the Edge for its looks and ride, fun to drive nature, plenty of power, great value for the price, and lots of high-tech features.  A few owners complained about the complexity of the MyFord Touch infotainment system, stiff seats, and one experienced a transmission problem. Another owner said he couldn't get used to the new turn signals that turned on, and then cancelled.

Owners commenting on MSN Autos offer up similar observations, mainly on the attractive styling, quietness inside, the peppy and fuel-efficient 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, fun-to-drive nature, and interior roominess. Some who purchased a V6 Edge didn't like the fuel economy they got, said that the high-tech dash was hard to use, and the seats could be a bit more comfortable.

Model/Trim Lineup

The five-passenger 2013 Ford Edge is a midsize crossover that is available in base SE, volume SEL, top-line Limited and Sport trim levels.

Standard equipment in the base SE includes 17-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel,  a trip computer, remote keyless entry, cloth seating, reclining 60/40 rear seats, a six-speaker sound system with a CD player with audio input jack, and capless fuel-filter system.

Moving up to the SEL adds such features as 18-inch wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, an eight-way power driver's seat (including power lumbar), leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an "EasyFold" second-row seat.

Limited models come with heated mirrors, 18-inch chrome wheels, an upgraded 12-speaker Sony audio system with HD radio, the MyFord Touch telematics system, an eight-way power passenger seat, and leather seats.

The Sport model is decked out with 22-inch wheels, sport-tuned suspension, special exterior styling, the Sony sound system and a rearview camera.

Options vary by trim level and are mostly grouped in packages. Included are the two-panel Vista Roof, adaptive cruise control, power liftgate, heated front seats, DVD rear-seat entertainment system, voice-activated navigation system, a blind-spot monitoring system, and, on V6 models, all-wheel drive.

For towing, the Edge can be equipped with a Class II trailer package with sway control.

Performance

Consumers have a choice of two V6 engines and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that can achieve up to 30 mpg and deliver more torque than the base V6 engine. In the view of most auto reviewers, the turbo-four, although a bit pricey, is well worth the additional investment.

A single six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission is all that is available across the Edge lineup, although it does get a new sport mode. Both V6 engines are available in all-wheel drive (AWD), while the turbocharged four only comes in front-wheel drive (FWD).

The base engine is a 288-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 that is standard on SE, SEL and Limited. The Sport is powered by a 305-horsepower 3.7-liter V6. Optional on the front-wheel drive SE, SEL and Limited is the 240-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Fuel economy on the 3.5-liter V6 is 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway/22 mpg combined (FWD) and 18/25/21 mpg (AWD). In the 3.7-liter V6, FWD models get 19/26/22 mpg, while AWD models achieve 17/23/19 mpg. The optional turbocharged four-cylinder achieves EPA-estimated fuel economy of 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway/24 mpg combined.

As for towing, the maximum tow rating is 1,500 pounds in the four-cylinder Edge, up to 2,000 pounds in the 3.5-liter V6, and up to 3,500 pounds in the 3.7-liter V6.

Interior

While the 2013 Ford Edge comes standard with many of the features that are typically found in vehicles in this class, most auto critics laud the midsize crossover's high-quality materials, along with its attractive design and comfortable seats.

Interior quietness is another characteristic often mentioned by the auto reviewers, who even go so far as to compare it to its luxury counterpart, the Lincoln MKX. That quietness is due to the extra sound insulation used throughout the cabin.

One point the critics are universally in agreement on is the complexity and protracted learning process associated with the optional MyFord Touch touch-screen infotainment system.

Another plus, say the reviewers, is the 32.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seats. With the back row folded down (but not totally flat), the Edge offers up 68.9 cubic feet of cargo space - which is considered good for this size of crossover-SUV. One nit in this area is that the rear liftgate might be difficult to reach for short individuals. The optional power rear liftgate is a good solution.

Safety & Reliability

As befits a family crossover, the 2013 Ford Edge acquits itself nicely with a full roster of safety features. That is the general opinion of most in the automotive press who review vehicles.

In government crash testing, the 2013 Ford Edge received a rating of four out of five stars for overall crash protection, three stars for overall frontal protection, and five stars for overall side protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2013 Edge the highest possible rating of "Good" in the frontal-offset, side-impact and roof strength tests.

All Ford Edge models are equipped with standard front-seat side airbags and full-length side-curtain airbags, antilock brakes and electronic stability control (ESC). The ESC can also detect imminent vehicle rollovers. Blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert are optional and the Limited can be equipped with a collision warning system.

As for reliability, the consensus is that the Ford Edge is about average. The J.D. Power and Associates Predicted Reliability rating for the 2013 Edge comes in at three power circles, about average for the class. Consumer Reports, however, said it expects much worse than average reliability, based on its subscriber survey.
