Overview

Overview

The 2013 Chrysler 200 midsize sedan and convertible offer numerous features for the price. The convertible is spacious, compared to competitors, but the sedan has much tougher competition in rivals such as the redesigned 2013 Ford Fusion, Nissan Altima, and Honda Accord.

What Experts Think

Most journalists agree that the 2013 Chrysler 200, while not standing out by any means in this fiercely competitive midsize segment, is still a lot better than the Sebring it replaced in 2011. With some pluses and many minuses, reviewers aren't all that impressed with the Chrysler 200 (or its corporate sibling, the Dodge Avenger, for that matter).

"In the relatively small convertible segment, the 200 is a strong pick. However, the 200 sedan doesn't fare nearly as well, falling behind a wealth of talented competition."

Car and Driver calls the 2013 Chrysler 200 "quieter and better to drive than when it was known as the Sebring," but the midsize car "still isn't at the head of the ultra-competitive" segment. Editors note that the V6 is a "compelling choice," but the four-cylinder is "adequate and returns superior fuel economy."

"Good value in a quiet midsize sedan or convertible." (AOL Autos)

In a review of the 2013 Chrysler 200 convertible (the Chrysler 200 is the only non-luxury midsize car available as a sedan and a convertible), Cars.com remarked that "Chrysler's improvements for2013 make this a better car, but it's disappointing that the changes took so long and affect only one version."

"With its available V6 engine, the Chrysler 200 impresses for its power and fuel economy. The interior presents well for materials quality but not so much for passenger room." (Consumer Guide)

Consumer Reports finds the 200 to be "outdated and outclassed" in design, although the ride is "compliant" and the optional V6 is "strong and smooth." Although the soft suspension provides "decent isolation," it also allows "frequent body motions," and handling, while secure, "lacks agility."

"If a powerful V6 engine, European-inspired ride and handling and a lavish interior are at the top of your mid-size sedan shopping list, the 2013 Chrysler 200 is tailor-made for you. The 200 Convertible offers seating for four and the only retractable hardtop in this price segment." (Kelley Blue Book)

What Owners Say

When owners of the 2013 Chrysler 200 comment on sites such as Yahoo Autos, Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds, Cars.com and the like, their sentiments range from mildly to wildly enthusiastic and from middle-of-the-road to downright unimpressed.

Typical praise includes great handling, peppy, good mileage, excellent fit and finish, great sound system, comfortable, nice interior and quiet ride. Some owners commented that the S package is a great bargain for the price and really makes the car look sharp.

Gripes include poor visibility front and back when parking, inadequate rear legroom, four-cylinder engine slow to react when accelerating, and road noise with windows open or closed, lack of updated technology.

Model/Trim Lineup

The 2013 Chrysler 200 is available in sedan and convertible versions. The sedan is available in the base LX, the volume Touring, and top-of-the-line Limited trims. Chrysler has dropped the S sedan. The Chrysler 200 convertible comes in Touring, Limited, and S trims.

Standard equipment in the base LX sedan includes 17-inch steel wheels, full power accessories, remote keyless entry, cruise control, heated side mirrors, remote trunk release, air conditioning with filtration, tilt and telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, and an AM/FM stereo with MP3-compatible CD player and an auxiliary audio input jack. Other standard equipment includes LED lighting, an analog clock and an outside temperature display.

Next up, the Touring sedan adds a five-speed automatic transmission (in place of the four-speed automatic in the base LX), automatic climate control, eight-way power driver's seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, and a six-speaker sound system with SiriusXM satellite radio.

A V6 engine is standard equipment in the luxury-oriented Limited sedan, along with 17-inch wheels, heated front seats, leather upholstery, remote engine start, a touch-screen audio system with hard drive, Chrysler's Uconnect hands-free phone system, a six-speaker Boston Acoustics audio system, and fog lights.

Chrysler 200 convertibles all have a power-folding soft top, with a retractable hard top optional on Limited and S trims. Other convertible standard features are about the same on Touring and Limited sedan counterparts. The 200 S convertible has the same Boston Acoustics audio system that comes with the Limited sedan.

The unique exterior trim and 18-inch wheels that were previously on the S sedan are now an extra-cost option package for Touring and Limited. Other optional equipment on Touring and Limited models includes navigation system and a power sunroof (sedans).

Performance

There's nearly universal acclaim among the automotive press for the V6 engine available in the 2013 Chrysler 200. But the revamped suspension and steering, say the auto critics, put the 200 at the top of its category.

Powering the 2013 Chrysler 200 LX and Touring (sedan and convertible) is a 173-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. A four-speed automatic transmission comes with the LX, while all other 200 models have a standard six-speed automatic transmission. Reviewers comment that this isn't the most refined engine in its class, but it's not the weakest either.

A 283-horsepower 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine is optional on LX and Touring and standard on the Limited. This engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Given a choice, this is the engine to have.

All 2031 Chrysler 200 models are front-wheel drive.

EPA-estimated fuel economy for the four-cylinder sedan is 21 mg city/29 mpg highway/24 mpg combined with the four-speed automatic transmission, and 20/31/23 mpg with the six-speed gearbox. The four-cylinder convertible only has the six-speed transmission, and the EPA-estimated fuel economy rating here is 18/27/21 mpg.

All V6-equipped models (sedan and convertible) have an EPA-rated 19/29 mpg. The engine can also run on an E85 ethanol-blended fuel, resulting in 14/21 mpg fuel economy rating.

Interior

Auto critics do have some good things to say about the interior of the 2013 Chrysler 200, along with a few gripes.

Compliments go to the tasteful interior and the use of high-quality materials with soft-touch surfaces. Seats are deemed comfortable and supportive, in both cloth and leather trim. A driver's lumbar adjuster and split-folding rear seatbacks are standard across the line. Testers also applaud the good noise insulation.

On the negative side, the Chrysler 200, being smaller than many of its competitors, suffers in rear legroom space and cargo space on hardtop models. Sedan trunk space is 13.6 cubic feet, considered low for the midsize class. In addition, reviewers note the trunk's utility is hampered by a short deck. A surprise is the relatively roomy trunk in the convertible that's due to an efficient storage design.

Safety & Reliability

Standard safety equipment on the 2013 Chrysler 200 includes four-wheel antilock disc brakes, electronic stability control, traction control, active head restraints, front-seat side impact airbags, and front and rear side-curtain airbags. The convertible has front-seat-mounted side airbags with head protection. Still no rearview camera for 2013, though, which leaves the 200 a bit behind the competitive curve.

In government crash testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2013 Chrysler 200 received an overall four-star rating, with four stars in front and rollover testing and three stars in side tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the sedan convertible its top rating of "Good" in frontal-offset, side-impact, and roof strength tests. The convertible earned a "Good" rating in the frontal-offset and side-impact tests.

As for reliability, the 2013 Chrysler 200 is below average, earning two and a half circles in the J.D. Power Predicted Reliability Rating.  Consumer Reports also notes that the 200's reliability has dropped below average.
