Is the gas cost worth buying an isuzu trooper?

This is more of an opinion but my friend has a trooper (i believe '91).. and I was thinking about buying it from her. I'm not good with cars but I do know that troopers get terrible gas mileage. It's also been sitting in her drive way for awhile now without being driven, so I'm afraid that if I do buy it, it'd be a waste. She said it'd most likely be under a 1,000 bucks.. my guess is around 800. What do you think.. yes, no?
