how do i get more power out of my old 305?

i have a 1985 GMC sierra classic 1500 4x4 it has a 305 engine with 170 thousand miles on it and is all stock except an edelbrock 1405 carb and an edelborck performer intake manifold
i have 33" mud tires on it and i want to get more power to the ground
i want more get-up-and-go out of it, what can i do this weekend to it without buying much of anything i have all the tools one could imagine
the timing is set at 12 degrees
stock setting on the transmission throttle valve cable (will adjusting that one way or the other help?(rebuilt tranny)
glass pack mufflers (will straight pipes be better?)
vacuum advance timing, new spark plugs
please shoot me some ideas if you have them
