Is Ford Contour SVT a Good Buy?

Im in the process on buying a used car and a private seller is selling a 1999 Ford Contour SVT. I know little about Fords and I know reliability is an issue. Anyway, the car was purchased in Cali and is now in Oregon. The car has 146K Miles but in good condition. Exterioir is excenllent and so as the interior. I test drove it and it handles very well. Engine and Tranny feels and sounds good. There is a slight crack on the front bumper but its cosmetic. The seller is asking $2900 and the kelly blue book value is around $3800. Is this worth buying?
One of the things that I looked for is that basic Ford Contours (LX,ES,SE) seems to have problkems with Water pump,brake rotors etc. I have gotten mostly good reviews with the SVT model. i believe it only takes higher octane gas which is 91octane.
2008-07-30 05:50:22 is the Ford Contour SVT a good car? - I've heard they are kinda slow is this true? I really like their looks but just wondering if the SVT Contour is good or not? Any ideas I'm thinking about buying a black one for around 2.5k but then there's a 1992 SHO for sale at around 3.4k but I hear they have tranny problems.
